Or maybe someone can point me to a better place to ask?

I'm in the process of building a CD player using an old IDE computer cd drive and a cd controller board I picked up on eBay. Everything is working great (I can do a write up later if people are interested), however...

I went to change the display from a TGK 162a to a JHD 162a (looking for a color change), and am getting nothing on the new display. It's getting power, and the backlight works, but that's it. From what I can tell, the pinouts are the same between the two, and my soldering job is ok. The old (TGK) display still works great with he controller board. There must be something I'm missing, but I'm not sure what that is...

You could try the new AV sub blog I started last week. Traffic has been light, but someone might be lurking and be able to help.

Let me know I can get you authorship or share this post for you.

Awesome! It looks like it will be an interesting sub blog. I'll have one authorship, please.

That's fine! I'm not in any rush. In fact, it will probably be a little while until I get a chance to look at it again. I guess a bit of the backstory is in order:

Kinja'd!!!

I have an old 1978 Sanyo JXT 6430A. It's a fairly nice all in one unit (tape, phonograph, and AM/FM). However, it lacks the ability to play CDs. I couldn't find a CD player I liked that matched the style of the Sanyo (I didn't try too hard), so I decided to built one. I have enough old computer parts lying around, and it's quite simple to get analog audio out of an older computer CD drive.

Kinja'd!!!

With that in mind, I got my hands on an old computer case (~1986 Leading Edge Model D. Yes, I have an operational one, too.) It doesn't quite match the style of the Sanyo, but it should be interesting at least.

It still needs a bit of finishing work (relocate the controls, cut a blanking plate to fit around the screen, mount the screen, etc.). I was planning on changing out the screen from the blue seen here to a green and black one, trying to stick with an '80s computer theme. If it works out, great. If not, oh well.

I figured out the problem, and it was a really dumb one. This controller kit uses a potentiometer to control the contrast on the display. Guess who never bothered to check what the contrast was set to?
